![]() ![]() It reviews the market barriers to improving energy efficiency in buildings and presents some factors that are helping to overcome the barriers. The chapter presents conservation supply curves that show the amount of energy that could be saved as a function of the cost of the saved energy and describes how whole-building approaches can produce new buildings with very low energy consumption. It then identifies opportunities for improving energy efficiency in the near term (through 2020) as well as the medium term (through 2030–2035). This chapter describes how energy is used in buildings today and discusses the factors that have driven the growth of energy use. However, there is still much that can be done to reduce the amount and slow the growth of energy consumption in residential and commercial buildings.
